Our OUTSTANDING swim team is diving in again in Summer 2024! GO SEAGULLS!

Who are the coaches this summer?

Head Coach Bret Hanemann is returning for summer 2024 with other familiar faces such as William Ehrensing, Elaine Marie Ehrensing; Thomas Cecola, Robert Cunningham, and Ian, Cecilia, and Kolbe Hanemann. Former coach Annie Lagarde is re-joining us this summer, too!

      What about COVID?

The coaches (as SYC employees) will follow all COVID rules themselves, and swim team members and families will abide by COVID rules, as applicable. For more information about SYC and COVID safety, please contact the club.

What about Seagull bathing suits and gear this season?

Seagulls are a spirited bunch, so please DEFINITELY wear old and new Seagull t-shirts and gear to practice, and all over town, all summer long! If you’ve outgrown or are running low, bathing suits and other apparel are available for online order via the link to Seagull Apparel.

Remember that Seagull gear is NOT available at the SYC Gift Shop. It is only available through the swim team apparel committee. Please contact Dylan Thriffiley (mom of Thompson and Margot) at [email protected] for more information.

      What about our Swim-a-Thon?

The Seagulls are excited to sponsor the Brooke E. Posey Swim-a-Thon again this year, to be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, 10am-5pm. This year it's benefitting STAIR! (Start the Adventure in Reading). Sponsorship information is available here. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information.

Are we going to have a Seagull Awards banquet?

Yes. The Seagull Awards banquet is scheduled for Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 4-7pm.

      What about swim team communications?

We have a few ways to stay informed throughout the season:

      1. SYC Website - we post some very general information about the swim team on the public SYC website. But because we have minors and also because the team is open only to children and grandchildren of members, we have much more information posted on the member-only-login portion of the SYC website. This is what you are looking at now.

      2. syc.swimtopia.com and the Swimtopia app- This website has the registration form. It is also where you will go to sign your children up for swim meets and to sign yourself up for specific volunteer jobs at swim meets. It is also where results will be posted. It is also the system that the coaches will use to send informative EMAILS to all parents.

      3. Groupme - This is what coaches and parents will use for general ongoing updates and chats. Please be sure -- for your profile picture -- use one of parent(s) and child together, so we can put faces with names. Thank you!

PS - We won't have TeamSnap in summer 2024. It is replaced by a combo of swimtopia and groupme.
Who do I contact if I have more questions?

Please email Brady Cunningham (mom of Robert and Watts) at [email protected]

  • Eligibility Requirements
    • Requirements of Seagull Swim Team members are as follows:

      1. Must have full breath control underwater and must be able to swim unassisted across the SYC pool (25 yards).
        • The Seagull Swim Team is not a "learn-to-swim" program. It is, however, a "learn freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly with SYC friends" program.
        • For safety reasons, children MUST be able to hold their breath underwater.
        • For safety reasons, children MUST have the ability and stamina to propel themselves across the pool unassisted. It's ok if their stroke is very sloppy.
        • A note about crying: if a child cries at swim team practice, the coaches will take a few seconds to comfort and reassure him/her. If that doesn't work, the coach has to attend to many other swimmers, so we kindly ask that parents take their child outside of the pool gates to calm down, and then schedule private lessons with a coach until the child gains the confidence to rejoin swim team practices.
      2. Must be interested in participating in swim meets. After all, the purpose of any sports team is to compete. However, participation in swim meets is not absolutely required.
      • Ages 6 & under focus on freestyle and backstroke
      • Ages 7 & up are instructed in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly
      • In competition, ages 8 & under swim once across the pool (25 yards). Ages 9 & up learn flip turns and swim twice across the pool (50 yards).

            3. Must be a child or grandchild of an SYC Member, and/or must be an SYC Junior Member.
                     - Junior membership is open to children ages 14-20. For more information, click on My Club > New Member Proposal.

            4. Must be ages 4-18 by June 1, 2023.
                     - It is possible but somewhat rare for a 4 year old to be ready for the swim team. Parents of very young swimmers are        encouraged to review requirement #1 above.

For more information about eligibility requirements, please contact Brady Cunningham at [email protected] or (504) 400-7004.

If you can't make the Orientation, don't worry. Seagull parents tend to just hang out during every practice. Returning Seagull parents, please reach out and welcome new parents. And new parents, please introduce yourselves and ask all the questions that you need. We are thrilled to welcome new families to our club and summer swimming fun!
