SYC wins eighth GYA Challenge Cup
GULFPORT, Miss. - The Southern "Big Boat" team has won an unprecedented eighth straight Gulf Yachting Association Challenge Cup. The annual yacht club challenge matches teams of three to four boats for regional bragging rights. This year's four-point victory was the narrowest in the current streak, marking the ascent of several other contenders.

Commo. Merlin Wilson had the following comments on Southern's winning effort:

"The conditions were perfect.  The wind stayed in the above 12 kt range for the entire weekend.
"The depth of the talent and consistency again showed this year.  No boat won its class yet [SYC] sailed as a team and won the Overall Championship. When one boat had a bad race, the others filled in with winning scores.
"Many thanks to Tim Molony, the team captain, for putting the boats and crew together again this year. Also to Potter Ballard, skipper of the team [support] boat, NATIVE SON, and to the supporting cast of RIB drivers."
