Adult Sailing at SYC is going to take a dramatic change for the better over the next few weeks. For the past two years, SYC has been looking for a keel boat to introduce PHRF racing into the program. In March, we found a Soverel 26 in Connecticut named Bruja (“Witch”). She was shipped to New Orleans and is now sitting in the wet slip where all can see her. She has already made her mark on PHRF racing winning the Race to the Coast by 15 minutes over two Melges 32s. She was skippered by Commodore Dwight Leblanc. She followed that up with six straight first place finishes at the Challenge Cup, one of the premiere PHRF racing events in the GYA. So she should perform well in the Wednesday night race series that occur between March and October.
This is where you can come in! Have you ever wanted to learn how to do bow, mast, or pit? Do you look longingly at the lake on Wed. night as the racer put on their show? Were you wondering just how you could get the skills necessary to go out and really contribute during the Wed. night and weekend races? With Bruja we now have a training platform for those who have the itch to learn more about keelboat sailing and racing. We have the instructors lined up, now all we need is you! Come take a ride with the Witch and sign up for a Wed. night series. A series consists of 4 consecutive Wed. night races. We will meet first under the club for a little chalk talk. (discuss the race, how it will be run, assign crew responsibilities and answer questions) Then off to the boat to rig. Two instructors will guide you through how to do the position you are assigned on the boat. They will also talk you through the starting sequence, up wind and down wind sailing, and race tactics. After the race plan on enjoying a drink at the club with the crew as you debrief from the evenings excitement. This is Adult Sailing, Performance Boat Handling, and Crew Training rolled into one class. Four Evenings of excitement! The cost will be the same as the adult sailing courses $175 for members and $195 for sponsored guests. Our instructors are championship sailors with special guest appearances from our clubs racing elite! We must have a minimum of 5 participants signed up to run each series. I know spaces will fill up fast so contact Jodi the Sailing Director (
