Greetings Team Racers,
Southern Yacht Club is pleased to announce the 2010 Southern Soiland Cup, to be held November 5-7, 2010. This year's event will showcase several improvements, and we hope you can all attend.
The most significant equipment change from last year is that we have all brand new boats (12), absolutely identical, to go with the colored team race sails that have only been used in three events so far. We will continue to use spinnakers, which are even newer. In addition to just being nicer to use new stuff, we are very excited to keep breakdowns to a minimum. Many of you have been quite patient with us as we recovered in fits and starts after the storm, so this is the reward.
The most significant schedule change from last year is that we will start on Friday afternoon, instead of Saturday morning. The main reason for this change is to virtually guarantee a double round robin of all teams, thereby keeping everyone in the hunt for as long as possible. We will probably count the second round for double points as well. And given that we can hit the water earlier on Saturday (and even earlier on Sunday - since we will have "fallen back" out of daylight's savings time), we will very likely be able to do a single or double final four. All told, the addition of a single afternoon will add significantly to the total races that everyone sails.
In common with the prior years will be the joy of coming to New Orleans in November (especially for those of you from colder climes), to race against your friends on the warm waters of Lake Pontchartrain, and to have grilled oysters and Abita beer on the deck of our new clubhouse (which now has a POOL!). We're keeping the cost down again, though have raised it by $100 to account for the extra day of lunches/waters/beer/etc. As for the nightlife, I know I don't have to go on at length about that, and I'm sure some of you would prefer that I not tell stories from prior years...
All told, it figures to be another great event, so get your crew together and send in the registration form (which is appended to the NOR). If you have any questions, please contact me by email or phone.
Thanks all, and hope to see you soon,
John Alden Meade
