Southern Soiland Cup Regatta starts Friday November 3
Eight high-level teams from all three American coasts converge on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain this weekend for the annual Southern Soiland Cup Regatta
November 3-5 sailed in club Flying Scots.
New York Yacht Club, Eastern YC, Annapolis YC and defending champion College of Charleston are coming in from the Atlantic side, with San Diego YC and Newport
Harbor YC arriving from the Pacific. The Gulf Coast is represented by St. Petersburg YC and host Southern YC.
The Southern Soiland Cup trophy was generously donated to SYC by Newport Harbor Yacht Club in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then the
Southern Soiland Cup Regatta has become known as one of the premier team events in the U.S., annually drawing some of the top clubs from coast to coast to
coast.
The donated trophy is on prominent display in the 1849 Bar.
Racing starts at 1300 Friday and will continue throughout the weekend, ending late Sunday afternoon with the traditional chargrilled oysters at trophy
presentation.
Since the racing will be conducted just north of Breakwater Drive, the club makes a perfect spectator venue, and members are encouraged to come out and watch
the tight roundings and fierce competition that team racing features.
Nathan Adams is serving as Principal Race Officer, leading a Race Committee of
12 volunteers. Grand Canard Billy Marchal marshaled a half dozen Mallards to cleans and prep the Flying Scots, which spent much of the fall awash in the
muddy lake waters that soaked the Swamp for weeks. |
