Southern Yacht Club narrowly bested host New York Yacht Club to claim third place among ten teams in the annual Hinman Masters team regatta sailed at Harbour Court in Newport, RI the weekend of August 20.
Led by skippers Johnny and Andy Lovell and Dwight LeBlanc III, the SYC team completed two round robins in second place, two wins behind New York. That was good enough for a bye into the gold knock-out series, but SYC lost to Noroton Yacht Club in the semi-finals.
The petit finals for third place pitted Southern against the host New York Yacht Club team, which had been seeded first after the round robins but lost to eventual winner St. Francis Yacht Club in their semi-final round.
Southern defeated New York 2-1 in the best of three series to take third place.   St. Francis won the Hinman Masters after finishing second the last two years. The St. Francis team defeated Noroton Yacht Club 3-2 in the finals, charging back from a 0-2 deficit to win three consecutive races and the Hinman Masters trophy.
