Invitational Cup title defense proves to be a tall order

Posted on 9/14/2019

UPDATE: NEWPORT, R.I. — Team SYC wrapped up the 2019 Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup with a strong closing day, placing third in the final two races. After struggling early, Southern was able to claw back to fifth place for the regatta, just one point behind fourth place. The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron was by far the most consistent team, posting just one double-digit finish to win the Cup. Second place San Diego YC was the early regatta leader and won the most number of races, but couldn't quite match the Aussies' consistency. Royal Cork YC and Royal Canadian YC rounded-out the top four. Click thru for results.

From Scuttlebutt Sailing News: Newport, RI (August 29, 2019) – For three United States yacht clubs, the figurative road to the sixth edition of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup was significantly more challenging than the literal one. While the 17 foreign yacht clubs that will travel to Newport from far-flung ports of call were selected via resume, the American teams were required to battle their way onto amateur sailing’s grandest stage. San Diego Yacht Club, Southern Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club will make up the smallest American contingent since the initial regatta in 2009. [Click image for full article.]
